Hong Kong Government Suppresses Freedom

Recently, the Minister of Justice of Hong Kong, Elsie Leung, issued a restraint order against three prominant Hong Kong protesters, forbidding them to protest in the city's immigration building aresa ever again. The restraint order also called for the three protesters to pay 10,000USD for the costs involved in this event.
This is yet another stance by the Hong Kong government to suppress human rights and freedom of speech in the area. Hong Kong's human rights and democracy have been decreasing ever since the handover. Earlier this year, the government's intent on passing the controversial Article 23 anti-sedition laws (a set of laws that limits freedom of speech and right to prosecute by thought crime) was met by a 500,000 people protest on the island's 5th handover anniversary day, on 1 July. Now, with this restraint order, the government of Hong Kong is trying to suppress human rights in form of restraint orders. This means even less human rights for all Hong Kong citizens and the eventual, and possibly inevitable, introduction of totalitarianism in Hong Kong

War In Liberia

In the recent days, many have no doubt seen this country on the news almost every day. The image of people fleeing attackers in the country's capital city will forever be remembered by many. This is the nation of freed slaves: Liberia.

Liberia is a West African country founded by the United States in the 1800's. The country, now embroiled in a struggle for its own survival and unity, has asked its founder for assistance in maintaining and rebuilding peace and stability, both of which can be considered luxuries for many people there.

The US so far is hesitant in sending troops to the area to maintain and rebuild peace. The only US troops in Liberia is a 41 member force assigned to protect the US Embassy in the capital, Monrovia. The US, whose role in protecting this nation prevented it from being colonized during the "Scramble For Africa" in the 1800's, should send troops to rebuild peace in Liberia.

The US, as the sole superpower of the world, can invade and liberate a country in a day. Its military powers are not to be messed with. This is the reason why the US is so suited for this mission. Once the US enters Monrovia, embattled president Charles Taylor will leave and the nation will rebuild itself again. The rebel troops, seeing US military powers in the region, will not dare to launch an attack, and the nation can enjoy a respite from the war that lasted 15 years.

I understand the US concerns about another Somaila incident happening (the incident depicted in the movie "Black Hawk Down"), but the case is different this time. Liberia is practically US's brother in Africa. Their governments are the same, cultures are relatively the same. These two nations also share a common language and past. If the US helps Liberia, it would be like a brother helping his little brother. The US, out of all nations on Earth, is the most qualified in helping this battered nation in rebuilding itself.
